Episode 6: Our comic books Episode

Greetings fellow Sackvillians and friends of Sackville!

Welcome to Episode 6 of Stories from Sackville.

We pause to remember three people we have lost: Katherine “Scottie” Mac Gregor (1925-2018) died at the age of 93. MacGregor is best known for playing Nellie Oleson’s mother Harriet Oleson on the tv show Little House on the Prairie. Roy Clarke (1933-2018) died at the age of 85. Most people will remember him as the long-time co-host of Hee Haw (1969-1997) with Buck Owens (1929-2006).

Of course, it was the death of Stan Lee (1922-2018) that inspired this specific episode. We will certainly do episodes on Little House (a Little House-Waltons tag team?) and Hee Haw (a variety show episode), but today’s episode is a celebration of comic books.

As a note, we should say that, while we give props to Jack Kirby (1917-1994) who helped to create Captain American and the X-Men, we should also have mentioned Steve Ditko (1927-2018) who helped Stan Lee create Spider-Man.

We talk about our favourite comics and why we like them. We talk about superheroes but also delve into other types of comics, especially war comics. Steve tells a story about an attempt to impress a girl that failed quite spectacularly.

This is the first episode that features the “Steve rule” about drinking.

As always, we hope that this stimulates more discussion, so we encourage you all to tell us your favourite comics on the Facebook page.

And, as always, thanks to all of you who have commented so far.
