Episode 10: Our Geoff Banks New Year's Eve Episode

Greetings fellow Sackvillians and friends of Sackville!

Welcome to Episode 10 of Stories from Sackville.

This is our first ever New Year's Eve Christmas episode. Sort of. We begin and end with New Year's Eve, but we do go off on some tangents.

Peter instantly ages us by calling people 35 and under "kids". And we begin by paying homage to the disc jockey Geoff Banks who introduced us to so much music as we grew up. As Steve says in the show, he hasn't been able to find any info on Geoff Banks, so if anyone has an update on him please share it with us.

Peter speaks on the Civil Rights movement and touches on Nova Scotian history. Steve tells a story about his grandfather and touches on the history of Halifax. Y'all might learn something in this episode!

So we hope you and yours have a great New Year's Eve (whether you go out and par-tay down or fall asleep at 10:00), and, of course, all the best in the new year.

As always, we hope that this stimulates more discussion, so we encourage you all to tell us, on the Facebook page, stories about your favourite New Year's Eve or Geoff Banks memories.

And, as always, thanks to all of you who have commented so far.

Episode 9: Our Christmas 2018 Episode

Greetings fellow Sackvillians and friends of Sackville!

Welcome to Episode 9 of Stories from Sackville.

This is our first ever Christmas episode. We talk about Ghosts of Christmas Past.

From the Christmas Wish Book to Christmas songs to Christmas television specials to Christmas movies. We discuss a wide gamut of things as we reminisce about Christmases of the past.

We also tackle the most controversial Christmas debate. No, not the Merry Christmas vs. Happy Holidays debate (though we do briefly touch on that). We settle once and for all the question of whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie.

We also remember Sondra Locke (1944-2018) and Penny Marshall (1943-2018).

As always, we hope that this stimulates more discussion, so we encourage you all to tell us, on the Facebook page, stories about your favourite Christmas memories.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, Happy Chanunaka, Happy Kwanzaa! However you choose to celebrate (or not), we hope you have a joyous holiday.

As always, thanks to all of you who have commented so far.

Episode 8: Our Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling Episode

Greetings fellow Sackvillians and friends of Sackville!

Welcome to Episode 8 of Stories from Sackville.

We have a question for y'all. Are you ready to rumble? I can't HEAR you. Are YOU ready to rumble? Tonight we jump into the squared ring. We're talkin' wrasslin'! And not just any wrasslin'. Oh no...we are talkin'  the mighty Atlantic Grand Prix Wrestling.

We do a deep dive into wrestling. We cover many things and wrestlers in this episode. There are some terms we define in the episode:

Kayfabe:           pretending the staged storylines are real and that the wrestlers are actually enemies
Face:               from "Babyface"; the good guy
Heel:                the bad guy.

We touch on some of the local greats (Leo Burke and Big Stephen Pettipas) and some wrestlers from away who became local favourites (Killer Karl Krupp).

As always, we hope that this stimulates more discussion, so we encourage you all to tell us, on the Facebook page, stories about your favourite wrestlers.

And, as always, thanks to all of you who have commented so far.

Episode 7: Our Places that are gone but not forgotten Episode

Greetings fellow Sackvillians and friends of Sackville!

Welcome to Episode 7 of Stories from Sackville.

Today we discuss some bygone places. Places are important growing up; our memories are linked to places. We remember where we were when important events in our lives happened. They also become important cultural touchstones. The Sackville Town Centre mall was particular to Sackville. Other places may have had malls called the Town Centre, but they were not OUR town centre. OUR town centre was unique and, thus, holds meaning for us as Sackvillians.

So we tell some stories about some of the places that held meaning for us. Places that no longer exist. Places we watched movies, places we ate, places where we even roller skated. Wheelies, Pizza Jo, Sackville Downs, Sackville Drive-In are some of the places we highlight.

Peter tells a story about his first trip to a bar (The Corral), and Steve tells a story about an incident at the local video arcade (Video Zone).

As always, we hope that this stimulates more discussion, so we encourage you all to tell us, on the Facebook page, stories about your favourite places growing up.

And, as always, thanks to all of you who have commented so far.
